I’LL TAKE HIM BY THE HAND
STORY AND TESTIMONY

Many of the songs that I have been blessed and privileged to write, are songs that I have been requested to write for some special occasion. “I’ll Take Him by the Hand” is one of those songs. Janet Ray, my special singing sister, wanted a special song for the young women she was teaching in our Mesa Arizona First Ward. (Janet Ray, Phyllis Heywood and I have sung for well over 500 funerals in our 50 years of singing together. Another story.)
Janet was concerned about the worldliness that our children were being forced to see and to hear without their permission. She asked me to write a song that would help protect our children from the evils of the world. My son Denny once told me that when he was in a movie and suddenly there was a scene he did not want to see, he would just watch the popcorn on the floor of the theatre and he did not remember any of the bad scenes and evils in that movie.
With this in mind, I wrote the song “I’ll Take Him by the Hand.” When we would present this song in youth firesides I would bear my testimony and tell them, “When you discover that in the midst of worldliness you are suddenly seeing things you wished you had not seen and/or hearing ugly and bad words that you wished you had not heard, if you will remember that your Heavenly Father is beside you, the evil, bad and ugly things you see and hear will not be remembered and will not injure or hurt you.” In the midst of worldliness, it is your choice to only look for and see the good and beautiful things of this world.
How can I be sure the path I follow is right? How can I be sure with temptation in sight? I know there is an answer, but I forget to see My Heavenly Father’s watching over me.
So I’ll take Him by the hand and take Him with me where I go. I’ll take Him to my parties, let Him met the friends I know. And When I see temptation and evil around me.
I know that cannot hurt me for my Heavenly Father’s with me.
And when He’s there I’ll do and say the things I know I should, I’ll act the way I know I should.
I’ll be so very happy I wish everyone could see,
I brought my Heavenly Father with me.
I’ll take Him by the hand and take Him with me where I go. I’ll take Him to my parties, let Him met the friends I know. And When I see temptation and evil around me.
I know that cannot hurt me for my Heavenly Father’s with me. I’ll be so very happy, my Heavenly Father with me.
The words to this song were also inspired because of my childhood experiences, “Singing in a Meadow” and “When I Was a Child so Fair” which will be included in my life story. Telling these childhood experiences has prompted me to change the title to my story from “My Life, a Song” to: “My Life, My Song, My Testimony.”
