In 1981 Irwin Phelps wrote me a letter requesting that I write music to the testimony of Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon found in (D&C 76). The letter said: “Wanda, I have revised the Easter Pageant Script to include the testimony of Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon. And I have sent the script to Salt Lake stating that the music was by Wanda West Palmer, so…… would you please write it? And, I would like it sung as a Solo.” I was thrilled with the request and began immediately!

Unbeknownst to Irwin Phelps I had already been prepared to receive the music for this special song. Our 4th son Kevin Earl Palmer, who was serving a Mission in Chili, had just written us a letter asking us to write and send our Testimonies to him. He wanted to know when we first knew that we had a testimony. With memories of my first testimony building experiences vividly on my mind, the spirit of testimony was already in my heart.

Placing my scriptures open on the piano I knelt down beside the bench, and asked the Lord to bless me that I might capture the beautiful testimony born by Joseph Smith. I could hardly believe the music that I heard! It was amazing! The accompaniment was so complex that I could not immediately play the music until I had practiced it over, and over, and over again! And much to my surprise, it came as a men’s duet, not as a Solo as Irwin had requested. I cried as I wrote it down on paper. The testimony of “For We Saw Him” still brings tears to my eyes each and every time I hear it sung.

“For We Saw Him” was never used in the Mesa Temple Easter pageant as first intended. After Irwin Phelps submitted the script to Salt Lake, they wrote back and told him that they would rather the pageant script remain with just the biblical text. But in the Lord’s work there is no such thing as an accident. The music for “For We Saw Him” was just waiting to be asked for and given.

FOR WE SAW HIM

This is the record that we bear,
The record that we bear of the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

For we saw Him, we saw Him, even on the right hand of God; And we heard the voice bearing record.

That He is the only begotten of the Father, The only begotten of the Father— That by Him, and through Him, and of Him, The worlds were created,
The worlds are and were created,
And the inhabitants thereof,
Are begotten Sons and Daughters unto God.

This is the record that we bear. This is our testimony,
Last of all, last of all, we give of Him: That He lives, He lives, He lives, He lives.

For we saw Him, we saw Him, we saw Him, Even on the right hand of God.
